BETFINAL’S LOOK AT THE WEEKEND

The 2018 IIHF World Championship has reached the semi-final stage and so far the main contenders are still alive, with only a few minor upsets so far, Switzerland are the tournaments surprise package. But to complete the shock they must see of Canada, and then face the uphill task of Sweden / USA in the final. 

World heavyweights Canada overcame Russia 5-4 in a thrilling quarter finals. It was by no means an easy victory for the Canadians, scoring 4:57 into overtime to edge the game. Canada look to be in decline – especially by Canadian standards. They lost in a shootout to USA, got beaten badly by Finland and then struggled to overtime with Latvia. The have drawn ‘lucky’ and will now face Switzerland, after they stunned Group B winners Finland. Will the Swiss surprise the Canadians, or will the hunt for the 3rd title in 4 years continue…

In the other semi final last year victors, Sweden, will go up against Team USA in what promises to be an entertaining match. Defending champs Sweden were taken to their limits by a brave Latvian team – but finished victorious in a 3-2 match to move on to a semi-final against the USA.  USA are looking strong, after beating Canada in the early rounds, then seeing off Czech Republic in another close 3-2 encounter. The Swedes will have to be at their best if they are to reach the final for a second year in a row, and face a potential repeat of last years final against Canada. 

Fingers crossed as were expecting a Sweden Vs Canada rematch in the final. What a final that would be!
